Recent Earth-based constraints on power, land, and water for AI data centers have accelerated interest in orbital alternatives, where continuous solar energy could support large language model training and inference. Starcloud demonstrated the first LLM training in space with an NVIDIA H100 aboard its November 2025 launch and ran a Gemini variant, while Axiom Space placed dedicated data-center nodes in low-Earth orbit in January 2026. Google’s Project Suncatcher targets prototype satellite tests by early 2027, and NVIDIA introduced radiation-hardened platforms in March 2026. SpaceX and xAI, following their February merger, have discussed scaling to millions of AI satellites starting around 2028. Key hurdles remain around radiation tolerance, thermal management, inter-satellite links, and launch economics, with upcoming 2026–2027 missions serving as critical validation points for commercial viability.

“Orbital data center” refers to any spacecraft, satellite, or equivalent technology carrying computing infrastructure that is launched into Earth’s orbit for the purpose of providing data-center, cloud-computing, or artificial intelligence computing services and which includes at least 100 data-center-grade AI accelerators, GPUs, TPUs, or substantially equivalent compute processors, (e.g. NVIDIA H100 GPUs, Google TPUs, or equivalent or successor chips).
“Successfully launched” refers to any launch which successfully places a qualifying orbital data center into Earth’s orbit.
