**American Doctor** holds the narrowest edge in the early 2027 Oscars Best Documentary Feature market on the strength of its Sundance premiere, subsequent festival awards, and August theatrical release backed by strong reviews and Watermelon Pictures distribution. The vérité account of U.S. physicians treating children in Gaza has generated industry conversation around its timely subject and director Poh Si Teng’s track record, giving it slight momentum over *Once Upon a Time in Harlem*, the restored 1972 William Greaves footage of a Harlem Renaissance gathering that earned widespread acclaim at Sundance and Cannes ahead of its October rollout via Neon. The broad field remains tightly bunched because no film has yet secured dominant guild or critics’ support, and historical patterns show winners often emerge from late-fall festival premieres. Upcoming screenings at Venice, Telluride, and TIFF, followed by guild nominations and critics’ circle results, will likely begin separating the pack before the January shortlist.
