Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro remains in U.S. custody following his January 2026 arrest by American forces and transfer to New York for federal drug trafficking charges under United States v. Nicolás Maduro Moros, carrying potential penalties of 30 years to life imprisonment. Trader consensus reflects a tight contest between 60+ months (35.5%) and no prison time (33.0%), driven by his not guilty plea, denial of charges as an imperialist plot, and ongoing pretrial proceedings—including a March 26 hearing where a judge rejected dismissal over legal fees—amid prospects for plea negotiations, evidentiary challenges, or diplomatic interventions. Lengthy motions and a possible jury trial loom, with conviction hurdles like proving leadership of a cocaine cartel keeping outcomes uncertain and separation hinging on prosecutorial evidence or defense successes.
