Recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, including renewed hostilities involving Iran and elevated crude prices above $100 per barrel, have driven euro-area energy inflation sharply higher and kept headline HICP near 3.2-3.3% in August 2026. The ECB responded on September 10 by lifting the deposit facility rate 25 basis points to 2.50%, citing persistent above-target inflation and upward revisions to its staff projections for 2027-2028. Officials described the move as data-dependent and signaled that further tightening remains possible at the October 29 meeting if energy shocks feed into broader price pressures. Euro-area growth forecasts were also revised higher, reflecting resilience in manufacturing, exports, and domestic demand. With the next decision only weeks away and incoming inflation, energy, and labor data still fluid, traders see limited separation between a hold and another modest hike, while larger moves remain heavily discounted.
