The April 2026 federal indictment charging the Southern Poverty Law Center with 11 counts of wire fraud, false statements to a bank, and conspiracy to commit money laundering over its former informant program has set the stage for a closely contested trial scheduled for October. SPLC entered a not guilty plea at arraignment, filed a motion to dismiss alleging selective prosecution, and continues to deny the allegations while preparing its defense. The burden of proof rests with prosecutors in the Middle District of Alabama, and outcomes in similar nonprofit fraud cases have varied based on evidence admissibility, witness credibility, and pretrial rulings. These procedural developments and the inherent unpredictability of jury verdicts sustain balanced trader assessments of guilt or acquittal by year-end.
