Voters in Colorado will decide Initiative 109 on the November 2026 ballot, which would require school and college athletic teams to be designated male, female, or co-ed based on participants’ biological reproductive systems and limit transgender students to teams matching that designation. The measure qualified after supporters collected well over the required signatures, but opposition groups including Rocky Mountain Equality and Families Not Politics have raised substantially more campaign funds and are mobilizing LGBTQ+ and allied voters in the state’s Democratic-leaning electorate. National surveys indicate broad public support for sex-based categories in sports, yet local organizing, fundraising disparities, and the state’s political environment have produced trader consensus favoring rejection at 60 percent. No major legislative overrides or court rulings have altered the direct ballot path ahead of election day.
