California's 48th Congressional District primary on June 2 featured a competitive field after redistricting via Proposition 50 shifted the San Diego-area seat from Republican-leaning to slightly Democratic-leaning territory. Longtime incumbent Darrell Issa retired ahead of the filing deadline, prompting Republicans to consolidate behind San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond as their nominee. On the Democratic side, San Diego Councilmember Marni von Wilpert and former candidate Ammar Campa-Najjar emerged as the leading contenders, with early returns showing Desmond in first place and von Wilpert holding a narrow edge for second in the state's top-two advance system. Additional Democratic candidates split the remaining vote, while the outcome determines the November general election matchup in this newly targeted battleground.
