Market-implied odds heavily favor a 25 basis point Bank of Japan policy rate increase at the September 17-18 meeting, reflecting broad trader consensus on continued normalization amid accelerating inflation pressures. Recent data showing 2.4% year-on-year real wage growth in July, combined with underlying CPI approaching the 2% target and yen volatility near multi-month highs, have reinforced expectations for tighter monetary policy, following the June hike to 1.00%. Analysts across surveys uniformly project the move to 1.25%, citing shorter intervals between adjustments and concerns over falling behind the curve amid geopolitical energy price risks. A no-change outcome or larger adjustment remains improbable absent a sharp data surprise or dovish guidance from Governor Ueda that alters the near-term path.
