Federal Judge Alvin Hellerstein's March 26 rejection of Nicolás Maduro's motion to dismiss narco-terrorism and cocaine importation charges has propelled the case toward trial, sustaining trader consensus on a potential lengthy sentence while disputes over arrest legality in Caracas and Venezuelan funding sanctions under US restrictions fuel no-prison-time odds. Held in isolation at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center since his January US seizure, the ousted Venezuelan leader's not-guilty plea underscores pre-trial uncertainty, with no trial date set amid appeals on extradition and Supreme Court precedents. Tight 37.5% no-prison vs. 32.5% 60+ months pricing reflects DOJ historical conviction rates on similar indictments against 45% procedural dismissal risks; a plea deal, funding ruling, or trial scheduling could widen the gap.
