Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District holds an open-seat jungle primary on November 3, 2026, under the state’s majority-vote system that requires more than 50 percent for an outright win and sends the top two to a December 12 runoff otherwise. Nine candidates qualified, including multiple Republicans such as state Sen. Stewart Cathey, Misti Cordell, state Reps. Michael Echols and Gabe Firment, plus Austin Magee and others, alongside three Democrats. The solidly Republican district features a fragmented field with no candidate holding dominant name recognition, unified party backing, or polling support near a majority. Vote splitting among Republicans combined with the smaller Democratic share has produced trader consensus that an outright first-round winner is highly improbable. Late consolidation around one contender or an unexpected surge could still shift the outcome before Election Day.
