California’s June 2 top-two primary for the 45th congressional district featured incumbent Democrat Derek Tran facing five Republican challengers in an Orange County seat with a sizable Asian American electorate. Early and in-person results placed Tran near or above 50 percent, positioning him to advance alongside the leading Republican, former Cerritos Mayor Chuong Vo, while remaining Republican candidates trailed. Ongoing vote-by-mail tabulation and final certification could refine margins but are unlikely to alter the top-two outcome under California’s nonpartisan primary rules. The district’s recent redistricting and competitive Cook Political Report rating have kept trader focus on which Republican consolidates the opposition vote heading into the November general election.
