The Bank of Japan’s September 17–18 meeting carries a 98.3% market-implied probability of a 25 basis point rate increase to 1.25%, reflecting broad trader consensus on continued policy normalization. Persistent underlying inflation near the 2% target, combined with yen weakness amid energy price surges and external pressures from U.S. Treasury officials, has accelerated expectations for tighter monetary conditions following the June hike. Recent wage gains and concerns that loose financial conditions could allow price pressures to overshoot have reinforced the case for action at the shortest interval since exiting negative rates in 2024. While the outcome appears highly certain, any last-minute softening in inflation data or sharper yen appreciation could still prompt a hold, though such shifts appear limited at present.
