The 2026 United Kingdom local elections on May 7 concluded with all 136 English councils declaring results for 5,066 contested councillor seats, where Labour secured 1,068—a net loss of 1,496 seats and control of 38 councils amid voter backlash against the government's two-year record on cost-of-living pressures, immigration, and public services. Reform UK surged to 1,453 seats (up 1,451), gaining 14 councils in Brexit-heavy areas, while Greens (587 seats, up 411) and Liberal Democrats (844, up 155) also advanced, fragmenting the landscape with national equivalent vote shares placing Labour at 15-17%, trailing Reform's 26-27%. Prime Minister Keir Starmer acknowledged the "tough" outcome without resigning, as over 40 Labour MPs urged leadership change; markets await final certification for resolution.
