This market will resolve “Yes” if any single team participates in three or more penalty shootouts across the knockout phase of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”. For the purpose of this market, the knockout phase consists of any game played after the group stage (Round of 32 onward, inclusive of the 3rd-place game). A penalty shootout is counted for both teams that participate in it. The three shootouts must be reached by the same team. If the 2026 FIFA World Cup is cancelled, postponed after August 2, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, or it cannot be determined whether any team participated in three or more shootouts within that timeframe, this market will resolve to “No”. The resolution source for this market will be official information from FIFA; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used. The expanded 2026 World Cup knockout bracket features five potential rounds after the round of 32 begins on June 28, yet historical patterns show teams rarely reach three penalty shootouts in one tournament. Records indicate a maximum of two for any side, as seen with Argentina in 1990 and Croatia in 2022, reflecting the low baseline probability of extra time followed by shootouts in successive matches. No standout injury or form trends among contenders alter this dynamic ahead of the knockout phase, and the wisdom of crowds in current pricing aligns with the structural barriers: even strong squads advancing deep face roughly one-in-four to one-in-five odds per tie after 120 minutes, making three or more instances for a single team statistically improbable.
