Eurozone headline HICP inflation reached 3.3% year-over-year in August 2026, up from 2.9% in July, propelled by a 14.3% surge in energy prices amid the Middle East conflict and Brent crude above $100 per barrel. The ECB’s September 2026 staff projections hold the 2026 annual average at 3.0%—unchanged from June—while flagging a Q4 peak near 3.6% from energy pass-through, with core inflation easing to 2.4%. In response, the ECB raised its deposit rate 25 basis points to 2.5% on September 10, citing sustained above-target pressures. These developments underpin the 81.3% market-implied odds for a 3.1%+ 2026 annual outcome, reflecting energy-driven upside risks to the full-year average despite contained underlying price pressures.
