St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds, NL Central rivals, split a May 23 doubleheader at Great American Ballpark after the prior day's rainout. The Cardinals routed Cincinnati 8-1 in the opener behind a two-run homer from debutant Bryan Torres, while the Reds rallied for a 7-6 win in 11 innings of Game 2 on Elly De La Cruz's three-run homer. Between contests, the Reds activated left-hander Caleb Ferguson from the injured list, recalled right-hander Zach Maxwell, and optioned struggling relievers Connor Phillips and Jose Franco to Triple-A; Chase Petty started as the 27th man. Both clubs carry multiple injured-list players, including outfielders Lars Nootbaar and Nathan Church for St. Louis and third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes for Cincinnati, which could influence lineup depth and bullpen usage in the series finale or any remaining matchups.
