The San Diego Padres (32-25, second in the NL West) and Washington Nationals (29-29, third in the NL East) split their first two games of a three-game series at Nationals Park, with the Padres winning 7-5 on May 29 behind Jackson Merrill’s go-ahead two-run homer and the Nationals rallying for a 9-4 victory on May 30 fueled by a six-run seventh inning. Both clubs are navigating multiple injuries, including Padres starters on the IL and Nationals arms such as Jake Irvin (shoulder). Recent form shows the Padres leaning on their bullpen and timely power while the Nationals have demonstrated comeback ability at home. Upcoming factors include pitching matchups involving veterans like Lucas Giolito and the impact of roster health on late-inning execution in the remaining contest.
