North Korea’s entrenched focus on expanding its nuclear and missile capabilities, alongside deepening ties with Russia and China, underpins trader consensus against a Kim Jong Un visit to the United States in 2026. Recent missile launches following U.S.-South Korea-Japan drills and the commissioning of new naval assets signal Pyongyang’s rejection of U.S. overtures, including scaled-back military exercises, while official statements condition any engagement on ending sanctions and abandoning denuclearization demands. No preparatory diplomatic process, congressional pathway, or reciprocal signals support a trip to U.S. territory by year-end, consistent with Kim’s prior meetings occurring only in third countries or the DMZ. A late breakthrough involving major policy concessions could still reopen the possibility before December 31.
