California’s 45th Congressional District held its nonpartisan primary on June 2, 2026, under the state’s top-two advancement system. Incumbent Democrat Derek Tran, who won the seat in 2024 by a narrow margin, secured a commanding lead with nearly 50 percent of the early vote, positioning him to advance to the November general election. Five Republicans competed for the second spot, with former Cerritos Mayor Chuong Vo and Westminster Mayor Chi “Charlie” Nguyen emerging as the closest contenders in preliminary counts. The district, encompassing parts of Orange and Los Angeles counties with a notable Vietnamese-American community, features a slight Democratic lean according to recent partisan voting indexes. Vote-by-mail ballots and remaining precincts continue to be tallied, while the general election matchup will be finalized once results are certified.
