Growing terrestrial power and land constraints for AI training clusters are accelerating interest in orbital data centers that leverage continuous solar energy and passive cooling. NVIDIA’s March 2026 Space-1 platform announcement enables data-center-class inference in orbit, while startup Starcloud has already demonstrated an H100-based spacecraft and plans a higher-power follow-on launch later this year. Google’s Project Suncatcher targets prototype satellite tests in 2027, and SpaceX has discussed scaled deployments using Starship. These efforts remain in early demonstration phases, with radiation hardening, inter-satellite networking, and launch economics still key hurdles that could shift timelines.
